Parents' DBT

Be Part of the Solution!

At Inspired, we work with teens, young adults, and adults every day. What we have seen, over and over, again, is that the group members at our center are most successful in using the skills we work on, when their parents and family members also have these skills and speak the same skills language!

We understand that being a parent can be a significant challenge. This is especially true when you are the parent to someone with difficulties regulating emotions. Our DBT Parent Program teaches you, the parent, how to more effectively address behavior, change it, and develop a more rewarding and meaningful relationship with your loved one. Each of these classes focuses on a specific skill to help you work with your family member, rather than you feeling like "the enemy".

You will finish our DBT Parent Group with a plan to address:

 More Effective Communication:

  • How to have conversations with your son or daughter, where you BOTH feel heard, so the conversation doesn't end in conflict;

  • How to move your loved one from defensive mode to making shifts in their behavior; and

  • How to manage your son or daughter's mood shifts without feeling you've been shut out.

Parenting Anxiety:

  • How to tell the difference between expected, appropriate behavior and problematic behavior that needs to be addressed;

  • How to create a balance between giving in and pushing too hard;

  • How to figure out the "right" way to respond to get the best result in emotional moments; and

  • How to manage your son or daughter's anxiety, when you are anxious, yourself.

Safety Concerns:

  • How to respond if your loved one expresses wanting to self-harm;

  • How to identify the warning signs of crisis behavior or worsening depression; and

  • Specific skills to use when they are most needed to help manage your son or daughter's anxiety and depression
